Seed and Garden: summer shrubs

Summer is almost here, so you might want to add color to your yard. CBS2 met with experts at Franz Witte to learn about bright and vibrant shrubs for summertime.

"A really popular choice is roses. They are super bright and super colorful. They come in all different colors, shapes, sizes and they're really fragrant," says Lily from Franz Witte. "I have a couple of reblooming options here. A lot of these bloom heaviest in the springtime and then rebloom in the summertime, sort of like weigelas. There are also lilacs that do that."

Other popular choices arehydrangeas, rose of Sharon, butterfly bush and spireas.

Lily adds the best way to care for these shrubs depends on which kind you are looking at.

"Some things may require deadheading, some things might not, but it depends on the shrub itself. Roses, for example, perform better if you actively deadhead them, which means when the flower starts to expire...you would cut it back to the next five-leafed leaflet. That will help promote to get another flower out of it."

Many shrubs do not require deadheading, like the hydrangea and butterfly bush. The flower will stay for a while, requiring less maintenance.
